Letter from the Executive Director
Okay so I’m be-bopping down the hallway heading for my office a few nights ago when I happened to pass by the bedroom door of one of our little boys, who by the way, was supposed to be taking his shower and getting ready for bed.
Of course, he left his bedroom door standing wide open and out of the corner of my eye I can see dirty clothes strewn about leading from his dresser all the way to the shower.
Luckily, at least this time, he did manage to shut the bathroom door!
As I stooped over to pick up the dirty clothes I heard myself thinking, “How many times do I have to remind these kids to pick up their clothes, pick up their toys, or take care of their stuff? Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know? Why on earth do I even try?” About that time, as I picked up yet another stinky sock, I heard probably the worst singing voice ever coming from the shower.. “Bless the Lord , Oh my soul. Oh-oo-oo.. I will worship his Holy name.. Bless the Lord Oh, my soul..Oh-oo-oo. . worship His holy name.. Oh-oo-oo..” ( special emphasis on the Oh-oo-oo-oo parts!)
I stood up straining my ears to listen to this terribly off key, but heartfelt rendition of a worship song that we sing here and at church, mixed with the sound of water spraying on the bathroom floor. The Lord taught me a lesson right then and there. In that loving, still small voice I heard Him speak to my heart and say, “This, Mr. High and Mighty Director, is why I even try.” Okay, God, I just got my toes stepped on! Can I get a witness?
To all of you who have prayed for, supported, helped in any way this ministry, I wish you could see the difference you have made in the lives of the kids who have passed through these doors. They come to us with such torrid pasts, with no social skills, so far behind in school, and with no knowledge at all of our Lord Jesus Christ, or of even the basic Bible stories that we grew up with.
You may wonder why do you even try? Why do I send money, why do I pray, or even what good have you ever done? You probably have felt that no one cares or even knows about your contributions to our home. We here at Covenant home know! We care and we appreciate your support. I realize there are millions of organizations out there that you could be giving your time and energy to. You don’t have to give to us, but rest assured every prayer, every gift, every good word reaches Heaven’s Gate, and you are making a difference one child at a time.
I am very honored and humbled to be the new director here and my door is always open to you. Any suggestions, ideas and especially prayers are much needed and appreciated.
Oh yea, that still small voice that whispered to me earlier also informed me that the awful singing coming from the shower was like, “ A sweet, sweet sound to His ears”. ..Ouch !!
